I had a user that was unable to open up a pdf file from Outlook 2007. All the rights were okay but the error was:
"Can't create file: fax @domain.PDF. Right click on the folder you want to create the file in, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder.”
So there was a space and a strange character but that is fine because others could open de file with no problem.
No what was the case with this user was that there was simple no more room in his profile to store this name. It made already the following names: fax @domain(1).pdf till fax @domain(99).pdf.
My point is that the location of this outlook is somewhat ambigious:

  • Outlook 97 - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Security
  • Outlook 98 - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.5\Outlook\Security
  • Outlook 2000 - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Security
  • Outlook 2002/XP - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Security
  • Outlook 2003 - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security
  • Outlook 2007 - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security

These are the locations where in the registry the setting points to where outlook keeps it's temp files.

Ofcourse this could be for other files as well so keep an eye in how much clutter there is in your temp folders
